New Michelin stars shine in the Algarve

Two restaurants in the Algarve have received their first Michelin star ever – the recently-inaugurated Al SUD Palmares Restaurant in Lagos, led by chef Louis Anjos, and A Ver Tavira in Tavira, led by chef Luís Brito – while Bon Bon in Carvoeiro has retained its star under new chef José Lopes.

2 Restaurants in the Algarve received Two Michel Stars out of the 7 Portuguese Restaurants in Total

These are among the main highlights of last night’s Michelin gala ceremony in Valencia (Spain), which saw seven restaurants in Portugal receive two stars and 26 restaurants receive one star.

Elsewhere in the Algarve, Hans Neuner’s Ocean Restaurant (Lagoa) and Dieter Koschina’s Vila Joya (Albufeira) have retained their two stars, while Rui Silvestre’s Vistas (Vila Nova de Cacela), João Oliveira’s Vista (Portimão), and Gusto by Heinz Beck (Almancil) maintain their one-star status.

Al SUD Palmares Restaurant wins Michelin Star

Chef Louis Anjos from Al SUD Palmares, which opened to the public just six months ago, is overjoyed. “We are so proud to receive this distinction, just six months after the restaurant opened. Our team believed from the very outset that we would be able to stand out, working tenaciously with a sense of responsibility to ensure a memorable gastronomic experience for our guests,” said Anjos.

He added: “This accolade is a reward for the entire team, from the kitchen or pastry section, to front-of-house and the bar. We shall strive to ensure that Al SUD Restaurant continues to provide unforgettable moments.”

Speaking to Lusa news agency, chef Luís Brito from A Ver Tavira described the accolade as a “dream come true”. He said Portuguese cuisine is his main source of inspiration for the “very homey flavours” that he brings to his dishes, made with the “fantastic products from fish to meat” that are available in the Algarve.

Speaking to the Resident on Wednesday morning, chef Luís Brito said it was now time to celebrate “this amazing recognition”.

Bon Bon, the established Michelin Star Restaurant Wins for the Seventh straight Year

Bon Bon owner Nuno Diogo has also celebrated the restaurant’s accomplishment which has come after a change in kitchen leadership and at the end of an “atypical and very difficult year on every level for the restaurant sector.”

As Nuno Diogo pointed out, this was the seventh straight year that Bon Bon has received a Michelin star.

“This is a distinction that honours us greatly in a particularly difficult year, one of many sacrifices and uncertainty,” he said, adding that receiving the Michelin star comes as a “prize for all the difficulties we overcame this year.

“It is an award that leaves us proud, but that should also leave Lagoa proud for having a restaurant of unmatched quality,” he said.

“I also want to thank chef José Lopes, our whole team at Bon Bon and those who contributed to its success with commitment, creativity and sacrifice,” the owner added.

For Carlos Teixeira, it was an especially extraordinary night, as the restaurant not only received its first Michelin star but was also one of the two first Portuguese restaurants to be awarded a Michelin Green Star – an award which “highlights restaurants at the forefront of the industry when it comes to their sustainable practices”.
