The Algarve now has fewer residency opportunities available for British buyers following recent changes to the Golden Visa scheme which came into effect this January. This scheme has proved very successful since its launch in 2012 and even more so in light of Brexit; providing eligible homeowners with five years’ residency rights and visa-free travel within the Schengen area of 26 European states, as well as the opportunity to live and work in Portugal and apply for citizenship after five years.

These new changes generally mean that coastal hotspots such as Lisbon, Porto, and the majority of the Algarve are now excluded from the Golden Visa scheme.
