From Faro to Lagoa: Unmissable events in the Algarve this Summer

Festival MED

Summer is here – and so is your essential guide to what’s on in the Algarve

21st MED World Music Festival

A major summer event in the Iberian Peninsula, the MED Festival returns to Loulé between June 26 and 29 for its 21st edition.

Known for its “fusion of cultural events ranging from gastronomy to visual arts, street entertainment, crafts, dance, theatre, cinema, poetry, workshops and much more”, the festival aims to promote interculturality and has been recognised by international bodies such as the Iberian Festival Awards.

This year’s guest country is Cape Verde and the line-up includes names such as Dino D’Santiago & Tubarões (Cape Verde), Carminho (Portugal), Systema Solar (Colombia), Vieux Farka Touré (Mali), Barrut (France), Balqeis (Egypt), and many more.

Portimão Sardine Festival

Portimão hosts one of the Algarve’s most anticipated gastronomic events.

From August 5 to 10, the town’s riverside area will host a variety of musical artists in a festival that celebrates an icon of Portuguese tradition: the grilled sardine.

The fish, available both inside the venue and in participating restaurants, can be paired with boiled potatoes and Algarvian-style salad or simply savoured on bread.

Throughout the week, you can taste typical flavours from the region and the country whilst enjoying the surroundings near the river.

Lagoa’s candlelit market returns

From July 3 to 6, the city of Lagoa hosts the 10th edition of the Mercado de Culturas à Luz das Velas, under the theme “Cultural Expressions, World Heritage”.

The Convento de São José and the surrounding streets come alive over the course of four nights, where more than 60 artisans pay homage to their traditions and arts.

The free-entry event runs from 7pm to 12.30am and features exhibitions, street entertainment, live music, craft shows, diverse cuisine and cultural symbols drawn with thousands of candles.

Faro Rooftop Festival

On July 4 and 5, Faro hosts the 4th edition of the Açoteia – Faro Rooftop Festival, a unique event that offers a look at the Algarve’s capital city and the Ria Formosa from a different perspective.

During the festival, more than 30 rooftop terraces in various buildings such as churches and hotels, among others, are open for visitors to enjoy musical performances, astronomical observations, dance performances, cultural gatherings and debates, film screenings and much more.

The first edition of the Açoteia – Faro Rooftop Festival took place in 2019.
