Upcoming Arts & Culture events: Algarve cities come alive with cultural and musical events

From open-air concerts and jam sessions and masterclasses to dance, music, poetry, theatre, humour, circus and cinema, there is much to see and do this Summer!

17th International Theatre and Street Arts Festival

Various venues in Tavira, including Praça da República, the Cloisters of the Carmo Convent and the Álvaro de Campos Municipal Library, are once again hosting artistic forms such as dance, music, poetry, theatre, humour, circus and cinema.

From July 6 to 14, the International Theatre and Arts Festival, dubbed “Cenas na Rua”, showcases different artistic genres, with a programme that includes performances by the French circus Compagnie Bivouac and Spanish artist Maitane Sarralde, as well as a performance of the Portuguese play O Juiz da Beira by Gil Vicente, living up to the festival’s rich artistic diversity and fusion of styles.

Loulé International Jazz Festival

One of the region’s most iconic musical events is back. From July 28 to August 1, Loulé’s historic sites, such as the castle and the Espírito Santo Convent, will host open-air concerts, jam sessions, masterclasses and other cultural activities.

Daniel Herskedal Trio

The Loulé International Jazz Festival promotes Portuguese and international artists, and is set to welcome names such as Vardan Ovsepian and Tatiana Parra and the Daniel Herskedal Trio this summer.

This annual celebration has been taking place since 1995 and is organised by the city’s Casa da Cultura, with the support of City Council and in partnership with Cineteatro Louletano.

Sweet Art Fair

Organised by Lagos City Council since 1986, the Sweet Art Fair invites you to enjoy its relaxed and festive atmosphere at the Lagos Municipal Sports Complex and its outside space.

Between June 28 and 30, the Algarve’s traditional sweets will take on special forms and flavours, highlighting ingredients such as figs, almonds and carob.

The sweets will be hard to resist, and the fair’s competition, which rewards creativity and the quality of the sweets presented, is not to be missed. As well as the gastronomy and handicraft exhibitions, there’s also plenty of music and activities for everyone.

Summer Rain exhibition at Tavira Municipal Museum

The Summer Rain exhibition is on display at the Tavira Municipal Museum until September 13.

During these months, a remarkable collection of works from the State Contemporary Art Collection will be available for viewing.

Curated by Fernando Ribeiro and Sandra Vieira Jürgens, the exhibition brings together the work of 25 national and international artists who explore the fragility of the boundaries between the material and the immaterial, in a poetic metaphor inspired by the phenomenon of summer rain.

Among the artists on show are names such as Paula Rego and Lourdes Castro, as well as emerging creators of contemporary Portuguese art.

Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 9.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 4.30pm.
