The exhibition evokes the natural beauty of the artist’s hometown – the Algarve’s coastal landscapes, the sea and the limestone rocks
Internationally recognised Algarve artist Vanessa Barragão is showcasing her textile artworks at the Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort, in an exhibition that opened to the public yesterday, May 5.
The exhibition, entitled “Maré” (Tide), invites viewers to immerse themselves in a sensory experience that crosses nature, territory and affections, keeping the handmade craft tradition alive through a contemporary and environmentally conscious language.

The exhibition is part of Tivoli’s Art project – “an ongoing celebration of art and artists who mark our time”. The project has been promoting the integration of art into its spaces as a differentiating element of culture and authenticity for decades, providing a stage for contemporary creation, from emerging to established names, transforming each hotel into a living gallery for everyone to enjoy.
“Now extending to the heart of the Algarve coast, through a piece that invites us to immerse ourselves in the essence of the sea, memory and sustainability,” Tivoli shared.
Originally created to inaugurate the Albufeira Arts and Crafts Centre, “Maré” represents the artist’s return to her homeland and is inspired by the movement of the tides, evoking the cycles of departure and return, personal transformations and the passage of time.

The shapes and textures refer directly to the Algarve’s coastal landscapes (the sea and the limestone rocks) and to memories linked to the region.
Vanessa Barragão has exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the Serralves Museum, the Oklahoma Science Museum and Heathrow Airport. In 2024, one of her works was included in the UN’s permanent collection in New York as an official gift from Portugal.
Born in Faro and with a studio in Albufeira, her work combines traditional craftsmanship, sustainability and an organic aesthetic inspired by marine biodiversity.
Her artistic practice is marked by the reuse of textile waste, especially wool fibres, which she transforms into large-scale textile installations using ancestral techniques such as crochet, felting and smithing.
The “Maré” exhibition will be on display at the Tivoli Carvoeiro until the end of July.
Admission is free.
