The Algarve’s barrocal is the perfect place for those looking for a peaceful lifestyle

One of the Algarve’s greatest assets has always been its deep connection with nature. From breathtaking beaches to world-renowned golf courses that seamlessly blend with the surrounding landscapes and natural parks such as Ria Formosa (in the east) and Costa Vicentina (in the west), the region’s natural wonders have attracted not only tourists but also those looking to move to Portugal and enjoy a more serene lifestyle.

Less well known, but equally stunning, is the Algarve’s hinterland, known as barrocal. With more and more hiking festivals being organised in inland areas to highlight the natural beauty of this part of the region, the idyllic Algarvian hills have also become a haven for those looking to enjoy tranquillity, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and cooler temperatures in the hot months, prioritising the peace and quiet that only the countryside can deliver.

The Monchique hills are the highest in the Algarve, offering incredible views over the countryside and the sea, where lush greenery blends with the blue ocean in the distance. Just like stepping into a painting of vivid colours, the scenery could not be more relaxing with the sound of the wind and birds in the background, which has attracted many buyers and investors.

Evidence of this is the growing demand for properties surrounded by natural beauty, well located, not too far from the beaches and with easy access to essential commodities.

Taking all these elements into account, three Algarve estate agents highlight properties that are ideal for those looking for a hideaway in the hills.

Fine & Country Algarve

Although there is no shortage of options, Zoie Hawker, managing partner of Fine & Country Algarve, highlights one of the most recent properties to join the agency’s portfolio.

Designed in 2008 by a British architect who renovated a traditional farmhouse on a 5.4-hectare plot, “Quinta da Serra” is just a 10-minute drive from the centre of Monchique.

Priced at €1,495,000, the property has a built area of 448sqm and consists of a contemporary-style main villa with three-bedrooms, and a rustic-style annex with two additional bedrooms. The outside areas were also upgraded, and the water tank was converted into a small pool.

For those looking for stunning views and quality construction and insulation – features that are particularly important in these areas – this property is an excellent choice. “The location is perfect for people who are not concerned about being close to the coast and enjoy the traditional restaurants and lifestyle of life in the hills,” emphasises Zoie Hawker. Although Monchique has all the basic services, Portimão is about half an hour away by car, via an accessible road with a convenient route, as are all the other major towns in the western Algarve.

Casas do Barlavento

In this same area, Casas do Barlavento real estate agents have a remarkable property consisting of two villas. “Lar”, priced at €1,690,000, has a built area of 424sqm and is set on a 28,240sqm plot, enjoying the beauty and serenity of the hills whilst still being close to urban centres.

“It’s the perfect retreat for those seeking tranquillity,” says Soraia Nóbrega, the agency’s marketing communications director. She tells us how Monchique’s popularity has grown in recent years, making it a favourite destination for people seeking peace and quiet. Among those who have already discovered this gem in the hills are several international figures, including former UK prime minister David Cameron.

The main contemporary-style villa, built in 2008 with traditional Portuguese elements, has five bedrooms (four en-suite), a large and functional kitchen with Blue Pearl granite worktops, as well as spacious living areas with high-quality finishes. It is cool in summer and cosy in the colder months thanks to the double-sided fireplace in the living room. Perfect for large families, the outdoor spaces feature well-kept gardens with fruit trees and native plants. “It’s the perfect marriage between luxury and nature. Here you can live in the countryside without sacrificing comfort,” Soraia Nóbrega points out. The villa is also suitable for small group holidays, where you can host family or friends in the two bedrooms of the second villa, ensuring privacy and relaxation.

Meanwhile, ONE Select Properties highlighted “Villa”, located in a private residential development named Goldra, near Loulé, where luxury villas enjoy panoramic views over the countryside and the coastline.

Boasting a built area of 615sqm on a 3,430sqm plot, the villa, priced at €5,395,000, has six bedrooms and five bathrooms, and benefits from 180º panoramic views. Completed in 2010, the architecture and construction combine traditional charm with contemporary elegance, which is reflected in the luxurious master bedroom and its en-suite bathroom.

The outdoor space is another highlight of this property, which features a gym, heated swimming pool, barbecue area with TV, foosball table and spa-style shower. There is also a private office in the annex which includes a suite, perfect for welcoming guests comfortably. Its location also offers numerous advantages. Although in a quiet area surrounded by nature, it is also close to world-renowned golf courses, fine-dining restaurants, and is just a 15-minute drive from the beach.

According to José Carvalho, ONE Select Properties’ Director, this type of property is mostly sought out by “retirees or residents who have lived in more central areas and are now looking for something different and are already familiar with the location”. The area is also popular with families who have moved to the Algarve and “are looking for larger plots, privacy and being close to international schools”, he adds.

Although coastal areas continue to be highly sought-after for luxury properties, the Algarve’s rural charm is winning over buyers who have a wide range of options available to them.

With easy access to most cities, restaurants and shops, the Algarve’s barrocal is the perfect place for those looking for a peaceful lifestyle.
