Famous Portuguese conductor will lead the Algarve Orchestra this March 30

Portimão’s Municipal Theatre welcomes a classical concert featuring music by Joseph Haydn, “whose Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross transposes seven moods into music, ranging from the greatest serenity to the turmoil of the earthquake that took place on Mount Calvary after Christ’s passion”. This is a work “rarely heard in its orchestral version and one that deserves all the attention it can get”.

On March 30, Martim Sousa Tavares will conduct the Algarve Orchestra (former Orquestra Clássica do Sul) on “The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross” by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) and the orchestral version of the choral “Erkenne mich, mein Hüter” from the “St. Matthew Passion” by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750).

About the Algarve Orchestra

The Algarve Orchestra was founded in 2002 and over the years they have performed in many different festivals and stages in Portugal and abroad as well as maintaining a commitment to the project ‘Música em Comunidade’ (Music in the Community), establishing a set of “unprecedented social interventions”, taking classical music to schools and hospitals in Beja, Faro, Huelva and Setúbal, and also the Prison Establishment of Faro.

Martim Sousa Tavares, the orchestra’s chief conductor, an active professional both as a music director and guest conductor, has collaborated with orchestras from eight countries and some of the main national orchestras, more recently including the Romanian Radio Orchestra, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras, Orquestra do Norte, among others.

Martim Sousa Tavares is also very active in the Portuguese media, “having worked on more than 150 programmes in RTP2, RTP Palco and Antena 2”, also maintaining a newsletter and a weekly podcast –the most listened to in Portugal in the field of music – with the Observador newspaper.

The concert begins at 9pm. Tickets cost €10 per person and can be purchased here.
