ArtCatto Gallery and Conrad Algarve team up to bring visually striking works to the Algarve

Loulé’s ArtCatto gallery and the Conrad Algarve hotel, in Quinta do Lago, have teamed up to host an exhibition by US-based artists Jason Hallman and Stephen Stum.

Working together under the name Stallman since 2012, the pair has gained attention for their bold fusion of painting and sculpture with their pioneering project Canvas on Edge.

In this series, each artwork begins with a large sheet of canvas which they hand-paint, dry and cut to size before carefully laying each strip on an open frame to create an undulating 3D effect.

The result is an organic kaleidoscope of colours that reflect off each other, creating a depth that takes on different hues as they shift and swirl depending on the viewer’s perspective.

The exhibition will also feature some of Jason Hallman’s solo work of excavated paintings. Inspired by the natural world and the layers of life beneath the earth’s surface, the self-taught artist starts by painting 12 distinct layers on a canvas, which he then carves away to expose vibrant bursts of colour.

The deliberate carvings create a textured, 3D effect, resulting in pieces that feel as though they are constantly evolving, like a geological phenomenon.

The joint exhibition opens on July 17 at Conrad Algarve and will be on display until late August.
