Algarvian sculptor Rodrigo Ferreira is strengthening his international presence this year through participation in two major ice sculpture exhibitions in Europe, alongside a large-scale immersive ice installation in the United Kingdom. Working across the Netherlands, Germany and the UK, Ferreira continues to establish himself as one of the most active and recognised Portuguese artists in the field of ice sculpture.

His most significant participation is at the Nederlands Ijsbeelden Festival, in Biddinghuizen – the world’s largest covered ice sculpture exhibition – open to the public until March 8. Spanning more than 1,500 square metres, the exhibition features monumental ice sculptures, some reaching six metres in height.

Under the theme “Let’s go to the movies: Ice sculpture from the silver screen”, Rodrigo Ferreira recreated iconic scenes from world cinema, including the DeLorean from Back to the Future, the emblematic Clock Tower and a bas-relief of Marty McFly, the character played by Michael J. Fox in the 1985 classic. The DeLorean scene stands at 2.5m high, 3.5m wide and 2.6m long, whilst the Clock Tower reaches 5.5m in height and 6m in width. He also contributed to exhibition scenes inspired by Ghostbusters and Mary Poppins. All works were sculpted entirely from crystal-clear and white ice, noted for their technical precision and attention to detail.

In the United Kingdom, Ferreira was part of the artistic team behind The Winter Club, a temporary immersive ice bar installation located in Canary Wharf, London, open to the public until February 28. For this project, he created two interactive ice sculptures, each 2.5m tall: a replica of the United Kingdom Throne and the iconic British red telephone booth, designed to encourage direct public interaction and enhance the immersive experience.

The sculptor also took part in Winterland, a seasonal ice exhibition at Europa-Park, in Rust (Ringsheim), Germany, one of the world’s most renowned theme parks, held as part of the its 50th anniversary celebrations,. For this exhibition, he recreated the historic Monza Piste attraction in ice, including the façade of the 4.5m-tall building, and an Alfa Romeo racing car, evoking the Italian circuit that left a lasting impression on visitors during the 1970s.

For Rodrigo Ferreira, ice sculpture is more than a technical discipline, functioning instead as a conceptual language rooted in ephemerality. “Working with ice is accepting that everything has a limited time. We know from the start that the work will disappear – and that is precisely what gives it value,” the artist said.

Alongside his international work, Ferreira continues to develop ice sculptures in Portugal for cultural, institutional and private events. He is currently the only Portuguese sculptor working on a continuous basis in ice sculpture, both nationally and internationally.
