Latest Highlights from Film, Art, and Photography in the Region

A Portuguese short film gains international recognition, Boliqueime’s Côrte-Real gallery expands, and Algarve artist Vanessa Barragão presents her new exhibition.

Meanwhile, In the Pink gallery in Loulé is showcasing a unique group exhibition, bringing together diverse artistic expressions honouring the role of the colour pink in art.

Portuguese short film gains international recognition

Percebes (Portuguese for ‘goose barnacle’) is a digitally animated watercolour documentary that explores the life cycle of this crustacean during its harvesting in the Algarve.

The short film was directed by Portuguese directors Laura Gonçalves and Alexandra Ramires, who also address questions about the locals’ relationship with the sea, tourism, and the disorder of the Portuguese coast.

Awarded last June at the Annecy Film Festival, Percebes was also longlisted for a nomination for Best Animated Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards.

Produced by BAP Animation Studios (Portugal) and Ikki Films (France), the film has over a dozen other distinctions and was selected for 91 festivals, according to the Portuguese Short Film Agency.

Côrte-Real gallery expands to Olhão

The charming art space in Boliqueime has opened a new permanent exhibition at the Boutique Hotel Casa Amor.

The space, which is located next to the hotel’s café, features works by 10 artists, including British visual artist Paul Wadsworth, Bill Bate, who creates semi-abstract works, and Spanish painter Rosa Salinero, who specialises in oil paintings.

The gallery in the rural area of Paderne will continue to operate as normal with various exhibitions in themed rooms.

Submersed

Algarve artist Vanessa Barragão is showing a series of sculptural pieces made from textile waste at the Lagos Cultural Centre until March 23, with an exhibition titled Submerso Imerso (Submerged Immersed).

With a master’s degree in Fashion Design, Vanessa explores the different ways in which yarn and tapestry can be shaped, with a focus on sustainable and ecological production processes.

Her work, which focuses on the underwater world, aims to create a space that fosters a moment of reflection and tranquillity through an exploration of the material and the space, as well as bringing the beauty and tranquillity of the ocean to the surface.

Splash of Pink

Splash of Pink is composed of works by Albarrán Cabrera, Albert Watson, David Yarrow, Derrick Ofosu Boateng, Philipp Keel, Rankin, Saidou Dicko and Vee Speers.

The exhibition also features a work by fashion photography superstar Paolo Roversi, and marks the debut of Algarve-based photographer Robert Popper at the gallery.

As well as highlighting the role of the colour pink in the world of photography, the showcase serves as an homage to the colour of the gallery’s building, a historic palacete which used to be known as the “Pink Building”. In the Pink is open Tuesday to Friday, from 10am to 6pm, and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm.
