Monte Rei North Course prepares for major renovation

Before closing for refurbishment, the course will host Make-A-Wish charity tournament in support of children with serious illnesses

Castro Marim’s Monte Rei Golf & Country Club, one of Portugal’s leading golf destinations, will close its North Course for six months for a major renovation project.

Before the works begin, the resort will host a charity golf tournament organised by Make-A-Wish Portugal on April 11 to help grant wishes for children with serious illnesses.

The event is open to both golfers and non-golfers and will be played in a fourball betterball pairs format. Entry costs €245 per golfer, with the full registration fee donated to the association. The aim is to raise enough funds to grant 10 wishes. The fee includes access to the driving range, buggy use, a three-course lunch, a prize ceremony and a charity auction.

Non-golfers can take part for €65, which includes a two-hour introductory golf lesson and lunch. Sponsorship packages are also available, including hole sponsorships and support for nearest-the-pin and longest drive competitions.

Following the vent, the course will close until September. The renovation will be led by Details – Hospitality, Sports & Leisure, the asset management platform of Arrow Global in Portugal, which oversees operations at the resort. The project aims to improve playability, sustainability and the course’s long-term resilience.

Planned works include extensive landscaping, reconstruction of several greens, bunker upgrades and refurbishment of buggy paths. A key focus will be improving water efficiency, with the resort modernising its irrigation system and pumping station to reduce water consumption and improve performance.

Training facilities will also be upgraded, including improvements to the practice tee and the introduction of new training technology. Maintenance operations are expected to become quieter and more sustainable through the use of modern equipment.

With Monte Rei already regarded as one of the best golf courses in Portugal and Europe, the project will focus on “protecting the character and playing quality that members and guests value, whilst making careful improvements that will allow the course to thrive in the coming decades,” said Nuno Sepúlveda, co-CEO of Details.

The course is expected to reopen stronger and better prepared for the future.
