The art of Storytelling: In the Pink gallery presents the first exhibition by Scottish photographer David Yarrow in Portugal
A self-taught enthusiast who became interested in fine photography and went on to become one of today’s most famous photographers, David Yarrow is showcasing the exhibition Storytelling at the In the Pink gallery in Loulé and at their new space in Quinta do Lago, where he shares more than 30 works about life on Earth.
Among the diverse themes presented, you will find portraits of sportsmen, supermodels, moments captured in the wild and in multiple countries and cities.
On display at the gallery until September 29, the Scottish photographer’s first exhibition in Portugal brings together a wide range of works, from oldest to newest, giving visitors a chance to enjoy different professional stages of his portfolio.
David Yarrow began exploring photography at the age of 15, when he focused on capturing amateur sports, which later evolved into professional matches – football aficionados will recognise his iconic photo of Diego Maradona hoisting the 1986 World Cup trophy in Mexico City, which he took when he was just 20 years old.
“My true love of photography developed through the darkroom process, watching the results of the print emerge. The excitement of seeing the photos on paper was greater than actually capturing the moment,” he revealed.
Through Storytelling, you will be surprised and moved by some true classics, as well as newer images captured in recent months whilst he was travelling around Europe.
In this exhibition, “there is a balance between some of the literal wildlife content and the storytelling works”, explained David Yarrow, expressing his satisfaction at presenting such a diverse show.
Although his selection conveys different feelings and emotions, the message he wants to communicate is the same for all the works on show: “We live in a beautiful world and we should celebrate it,” said the photographer.
His work is not governed by a single style but rather by his curiosity and interest in various themes, and this is precisely what you can expect from this exhibition: a mixture of moments and experiences that reflect some of his interests and experiences.
“There are some very special pieces involved that are hard to come by, as well as some standout moments from shoots this year so far that haven’t been included in an exhibition yet, which is always exciting,” he highlighted.
Although all the pictures have a special and unique meaning for the photographer, the one that stands out the most is The Home of Golf, taken at St Andrews in Scotland, in celebration of the 150th edition of the British Open.
He has a “great deal of affection” for this work, not only because it represents his home country and is much appreciated by the Scots, but also because it helped him raise a significant amount of money, and continues to do so, for charity.
The most striking piece is Welcome to the Jungle, taken “in a moment of luck” on the island of Borneo, located in South-East Asia. The three orangutans’ orange fur – who were in perfect symmetry and facing the camera head-on – stand out in contrast to other black-and-white works presented by David Yarrow.
In fact, this work perfectly embodies the characteristics that the photographer values: a close, clean foreground and, although proximity is not a decisive factor, trying to achieve it is an integral part of his approach. “These factors allow me to convey more emotion and a contextual narrative,” he commented, whilst revealing that he avoids clear similarities in his work and does not identify with any specific artistic genre.
One of the world’s best-selling photographers, David Yarrow is constantly surprising himself, as he never shoots the same subject.
“To be photographing one thing all the time is boring,” he explained. As well as currently enjoying the power of capturing and immortalising moments, he sees it as “an honour and a privilege to be able to use the camera to engage with other people. It is a conduit to your emotions and your storytelling capacity”, he said.
Over the past four years, he has explored the American Wild West, “to tell new stories that entertain rather than teach”. Last year, his exhibition at the Maddox Gallery in London had huge queues of people from different nationalities who were excited to see his work in person.
His career has seen several highlights, but one of his most cherished recollections is his first exhibition in Moscow in 2018, which took place at the Museum of Modern Art, due to the prestigiousness of the venue.
His first exhibitions in Dallas, in the US state of Texas, and Oslo, in Norway, also stand out due to the unexpected number of visitors.
Yarrow’s work is sold all over the world – over the last few years, he has sold over €100 million worth of photos. As well as being a photographer, he is also a philanthropist, having raised more than €10 million for charities, and founded the David Yarrow Family Foundation in 2023 to raise funds for oncology research and the creative arts in Scotland.
With a degree in Management and Accounting from the University of Edinburgh, David Yarrow switched to photography and identifies as both a storyteller and a photography specialist. The Scottish photographer has been constructing his artistic identity, continually living new experiences and deepening his knowledge, without having defined a plan for the future.
His idea is to continue enjoying the unexpected, constantly striving to improve his work and evolve, whilst maintaining the authenticity that characterises him so well and his willingness to embrace new challenges.
The Storytelling exhibition can be visited at the In the Pink gallery until September 29, from Tuesday to Saturday, and at the gallery’s space in Quinta Shopping until August 15, from Monday to Saturday.
