The exhibition invites visitors to slow down, question, and experience a sense of clarity and a moment away from distraction while their curiosity is aroused
Dutch photographer Bastiaan Woudt is bringing his talent to the Algarve, with a solo exhibition taking place at Loulé’s In The Pink – Fine Art Photo Gallery.
This is the second time since 2022 that the artist showcases his work in Portugal, and at the local gallery.

Starting September 4, the exhibition displays the artist’s latest work, ranging from portraits to landscapes and images reinterpreted with Artificial Intelligence (AI), which reflect his minimalist, refined and monochrome style.

Spread across two floors are five collections sharing a common language, telling travel stories and unveiling unique projects.
On the ground floor, you will find Rhythm, whilst the first floor showcases Karawan, Peak, Champions and Echo from Beyond. Although they are all extremely relevant, the artist highlights the Champions series, photographed in Zambia in collaboration with Orange Babies, an organisation that has been supporting children and women with HIV for 25 years.

“The portraits in this project highlight resilience and identity, and are part of a broader commitment to combine art with social purpose,” emphasises Bastiaan Woudt.
Following a completely different approach, the photographer is also showcasing Echo from Beyond, a unique project where he uses AI as a creative tool to transform images from his photo archive into new pieces.
Across all his work, Bastiaan Woudt takes out “everything that feels unnecessary, so that the focus stays on form, light, and presence.

Echo From Beyond
Whether it’s a studio portrait, an AI-generated image, or a landscape, they all speak the same visual language: quiet, intentional, and graphic”, he explains, adding that this exhibition is also a reflection on the evolution of his style, with the introduction of “more experimental elements whilst staying rooted in simplicity”.
There is a clear intention in his work to reduce the visual to its most essential form, through the choice of black and white images and in the way contrast and space are explored. “There’s a sense of stillness throughout, but also an underlying rhythm that ties the works together visually and conceptually,” says Bastiaan Woudt.
One of his standout portraits is Athena, a large-scale piece that the artist describes as “bold, sculptural and full of presence”, created in 2022 with his muse, the model Tinotenda Mushore.

Champions
From the Champions series, Atlas is his favourite due to its strong and poetic effect – one of the key pieces in the project.
From the Echo from Beyond collection, Bastiaan Woudt finds it difficult to choose just one of the four unique pieces, printed on delicate Japanese paper. “They are small but incredibly detailed. Little gems that bridge new technology with traditional craftsmanship,” he explains.

His inspiration comes from diverse information he picks up on from everyday life as well as experiences that feed his creative process.
Whilst Champions was profoundly influenced by the people and stories he found in Zambia and shows “real experiences and human connection”, Echo from Beyond takes a more internal approach, based on psychedelic experiences, memories and subconscious images. “Each image is the result of a layered process that blends past, present, and imagined realities,” explains the photographer.

Champions
A self-taught artist who has been redefining the boundaries of contemporary photography, Bastiaan Woudt hopes that, with this exhibition, visitors can reflect, question what they see and feel, and slow down in order to achieve “a sense of clarity and a moment away from distraction”, whilst their curiosity is aroused.
Bastiaan Woudt shares that he began exploring his love of photography after getting a degree in Hotel Management. Although he never planned to pursue photography as a career, he explains that as soon as he picked up a camera, he became obsessed and learnt everything by himself, both technical and creative aspects.

Champions
“What started as a personal passion turned into a full-time artistic practice, and eventually into a career that now spans exhibitions, books, and creative direction,” he reflects. The photographer shares that the work of Irving Penn and Richard Avedon helped him understand that “art can be a language, not just something to look at, but a way to communicate”.
Today, Bastiaan Woudt cannot imagine his life without photography – it is ingrained in the way he observes, reflects and creates.

Echo From Beyond
Throughout his career, he has exhibited at international art fairs such as Paris Photo, AIPAD in New York and Photo London. In 2022, he presented his first solo exhibition at the Kranenburgh Museum in Bergen, Netherlands.
The photographer also stands out for his editorial and commercial collaborations with publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, British Vogue, Numéro Netherlands, L’Officiel, New York Magazine and Chanel, as well as having represented renowned galleries such as Bildhalle (Zurich and Amsterdam), Atlas Gallery (London), Jackson Fine Art (Atlanta, USA) and Fahey/Klein Gallery (Los Angeles, USA).

He is also the founder of the publishing house and creative platform 1605 Collective and the recently launched annual 1605 Magazine, which brings together established and emerging artists in the world of art, design and culture.
Despite his success, his ambition does not stop here. Bastiaan Woudt is currently developing several projects, including a series photographed in Japan, where he travelled a Buddhist route by bicycle for four weeks, which will be launched next year.
At the same time, he is continuing with the Echo from Beyond project, exploring new visual possibilities, whilst also dedicating his time to portrait work in the studio and thinking about where his next trip might take him.
