Portimão’s municipal theatre “TEMPO” features a set of events for all tastes: dance, piano solo, orchestra or modern music

TEMPO (Teatro Municipal de Portimão) has prepared an eclectic programme for November, including a piano concert, a recital by the Orquestra Sinfónica do Algarve, a live radio show, and a dance performance created and directed by well-known choreographer Marion Sparber.

November 12 – 7th Algarve International Piano Festival, piano solo concert by Rodrigo Teixeira

The programme starts on November 12 at 19:00, with a concert featured in the 7th Algarve International Piano Festival. Soloist Rodrigo Teixeira, winner of the 2022 Young Musicians Award, will take the stage in the Grand Auditorium to perform works by Beethoven («Sonata nº30 in E Major, Op.109»), Rachmaninoff («Sonata nº2, Op.36»), Bartók («Piano Sonata, Sz.80») and Liszt («Piano Sonata, Sz.80»).

Rodrigo Teixeira, who works as an accompanying pianist at the Academia de Música da Maia, studied with names such as Jill Lawson, Teresa Xavier, Helena Galante and Fausto Neves, among others. He has won several awards in national and international competitions.

Tickets cost between €12 and €20 and are on sale online and at the TEMPO box office, where senior (65+) and student tickets can be purchased with a 50% discount upon presentation of documentation.

November 15 – Algarve’s Symphonic Orchestra

On November 15, the Orquestra Sinfónica do Algarve will perform the classic composition for children, «Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra», by Benjamin Britten. This performance was created to explain how a symphony orchestra works, the function of each instrument and its characteristics.

Presented to schools all over the world by the best orchestras, this composition is considered fundamental for children’s education and general culture. Therefore, two free sessions, aimed at the 4th and 5th years of the Portimão schools, are scheduled at 11:00 and 15:00. There is also a session planned for families at 19:00. The performances are led by maestro Armando Mota and narrated by Urbano Oliveira.

The session for families also includes excerpts from Ravel and Schostakovich. Tickets cost €7 and can be purchased online and at the TEMPO ticket office.

November 17 – Live Music for the Radio Show “Shock Frontal ao Vivo”, blending traditional Portuguese music with modern sounds

On November 17, the live radio programme «Shock Frontal ao Vivo» is back for another session featuring Suricata. Band members Pedro Gil (electric guitar), Tércio Freire (baritone guitar) and Paulo Franco (percussions) crossed traditional Portuguese music with modern music, creating a sound that merges fado, jazz and blues.

Produced and presented by Ricardo Coelho and Júlio Ferreira, the Alvôr FM radio programme «Choque Frontal ao Vivo» celebrates its fifth anniversary this year. The event will bring together 125 guests to watch the performances and socialise with the artists.

The recordings of the shows are carried out live from 21:00, with a subsequent transmission on Alvôr FM. Those interested must collect a free invitation at the TEMPO box office.

November 26 – Dance Show “No, woman, no cry… but when they do?”

Finally, on November 26, Marion Sparber’s dance show «No, woman, no cry… but when they do?» comes as an artistic invitation to redefine women in the modern world and as a response to the men’s play «Big boys don’t cry… but when they do?”, also choreographed by the dancer in 2020.

The idea was to create a counterpart of the masculine play and present a deep exploration of the genre. It results in a multidisciplinary dance-theatre performance influenced by dance, circus and live music.

The performance questions the traditional image of femininity, sarcastically and theatrically. It answers questions such as what it means to be a woman these days, what impact education, emancipation, equality and gender struggle have on femininity, what is not proper for a woman and why they are still at a disadvantage in many areas.

Together with seven women of different nationalities and age groups (performers Alex Kovú, Anna Ting Nissen Bech, Breeanne Camille Saxton, Maja Parysek, Sofia Brito and Tamae Yoneda, who will evolve on stage), Sparber investigates behaviour, expectations and traditions.

Tickets for this show also cost €7 and are on sale online and at the TEMPO box office.
