Built over the centuries-old Port wine cellars, The Lodge hotel offers unique guest experiences

Making a difference: contemporary luxury hotel in Porto provides guests with the opportunity to delve into the wine world, an important part of the region’s history

Open around a year ago, The Lodge Wine & Business Hotel, located in Vila Nova de Gaia, was built over the centuries-old Port wine cellars. Keeping the original façade, as it is located in an area classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, this five-star hotel stands out for its contemporary luxury and exclusive services.

Overlooking the Douro River and with a unique view of the city of Porto, The Lodge pays tribute to Portugal and, in particular, the region. Its interiors, designed by Nini Andrade da Silva, reflect modernity whilst taking inspiration from the beauty of the Douro wine region, with countless references to the world of wine. Proof of this is the old barrel that is part of the stairway structure leading to the foyer, the curvilinear features reminiscent of vines, the floor evocative of the cellars and the wicker baskets that pay homage to the grape harvests.

The hotel has seven floors, offering 119 rooms and suites. The highlight here is the duplex Signature Suites, covering a 215 sqm area, with two bedrooms, a living area and kitchenette, a dining room and a space with exercise equipment. Every room is a tribute to Portugal, with 100% Portugal-made mattresses, bed linen and towels.

The Lodge also shines on the gastronomy front. The Dona Maria Restaurant, under the helm of chef João Vieira, revives comfort food, combining Portuguese tradition and modernism in a menu that features some of the best traditional recipes from Porto and the north of the country, such as clams à Bulhão Pato and veal stew with sausage rice.

The Dona Maria Restaurant boasts two iconic spaces – the Sala dos Vinte and Sala dos Trinta – which are ideal for private events, offering all the ingredients for exclusive experiences: themed dinners, wine tastings and show-cooking, among others.

The hotel has a programme that aims to take each guest through the ins and outs of the wine world, with experiences that demystify wine, exclusive tastings and unique gastronomic moments. Designed with both amateur and experienced wine lovers in mind, The Lodge combines the most intoxicating wine experiences with a relaxed and glamorous atmosphere.

From menus with wine pairing to partnerships with Port wine producers and links to the Port and Douro areas, there are several experiences available on request, as well as workshops, wines and tastings.
