From golf course upgrades to active programmes and major cycling events, the region keeps moving this season
Major overhaul for Monte Rei golf course
Monte Rei’s North Course, designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus and one of the Algarve’s most prestigious golf courses, is set to close for six months (from April to September) as part of a significant renovation.
Planned works include extensive landscaping, the reconstruction of greens, bunker upgrades and the refurbishment of buggy paths for improved playability, sustainability and long-term resilience.
Training facilities will also be upgraded, with improvements to the practice tee and the introduction of new training technology.
Vilalara partners with LUX Tennis
Vilalara Grand Hotel Algarve, in Porches, has partnered with LUX Tennis to expand its sports programme at the resort’s Racket Club, marking the brand’s first collaboration in mainland Portugal.
The programme offers tennis, padel and pickleball activities, including private lessons, group sessions and social clinics for players of all levels. Junior Racquet Camps for children aged 4–16 have also been introduced.
The club features three tennis courts, one padel court and two pickleball courts, with special events through this new partnership featuring professional players planned throughout the year.
Algarve back on Volta a Portugal calendar
Albufeira will host the finish line of a stage of the 87th Portuguese Tour, from August 5 to 16, marking the race’s return to the region after eight years.
For the 2026 European City of Sport, this is another step to strengthen its role in sport and tourism, with economic and social impact.
Mayor Rui Cristina highlighted the importance of welcoming this iconic event of the national and international cycling calendar.
