Unwind with the Algarve’s sports and wellness offerings

As the weather warms up in the Algarve, many sports and wellness activities return to the area, including football training sessions by UEFA coaches at Quinta do Lago resort, racket sports at the Vilamoura Tennis & Padel Academy, and the International GT Open at the Algarve International Racetrack this month, along with relaxation options in the region’s spas.

Rackets out

Racket sports are increasingly popular in Portugal, and the growth of padel has given rise to another sport called pickleball.

Described as a mixture of tennis, badminton and table tennis, it’s a fast-paced sport but not as intense.

Typically played in pairs, the rackets are square-shaped and the ball is light and full of holes, which makes pickleball a pleasant alternative to the more demanding padel or tennis, perfect for all age groups.

In the Algarve, there are already several groups dedicated to the sport, and the Vilamoura Tennis & Padel Academy will be hosting the 5th stage of the Portugal Pickleball Tour from April 26 to 28.

Adrenaline and speed

The Algarve International Racetrack, in Portimão, will once again host the International GT Open, with the opening round taking place between April 28 and 30.

The race has been organised by the Spaniards of GT Sport since 2006 and features seven rounds split over 14 races, with drivers fighting for the titles in the GT3 Pro, GT3 Pro-Am, GT3 Am, GT Cup Am and GT Cup Pro-Am classes.

GT Open

Before the next stage in Germany, the race takes place on the Algarve circuit known for its similarities to the old Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps, with a naturally undulating track and a width that is great for overtaking.

Sensorial experience

Located in Lugar do Montinho, the Monchique Resort & Spa is nestled in the Algarve hills and draws inspiration from the region’s natural resources, in particular its spa.

Open to the public, the spa invites everyone to try their treatments with brands such as Seed to Skin, with natural, organic and wild ingredients, sustainably sourced from the brand’s organic Tuscan farm or from eco-friendly micro-producers.

It also has an indoor pool, hamman, sauna, relaxation suites and a fully equipped gym.
