From revolutionary sparkling wines, vintage and sparkling Negra Moles and a promising new Reserva release
Ageing well
Young producer João Caldeira has recently introduced his first Reserva, the Dito Cujo Reserva Tinto 2022 (€22), a blend of Syrah, Alicante Bouschet, and Touriga Nacional.
Fruit of the producer’s first vintage, this aged wine offers aromas of plum jam and ripe cherry, complemented by spicy notes that enhance its appeal.
A subtle smoky aroma, resulting from the appropriately used oak, is also present. On the palate, it’s full of fruit, featuring smooth tannins and balanced acidity.
The wood notes come back, blending harmoniously with smoky hints that enrich the blend and leave a medium to long aftertaste.
Revolutionary bubbles
Adega do Cantor has launched its 2022 Sparkling Brut Nature (€19). The blend of Arinto and Antão Vaz continues to showcase biscuit notes, harmoniously balanced with citrus flavours, fresh apple, and a hint of tropical fruit.

On the palate, it offers a creamy texture, complemented by citrus liveliness that energises each sip and delicate tropical undertones. The bubbles are fine and well-integrated, lingering persistently – imparting a light and flavourful character.
It concludes with a medium length, leaving you wanting more. The previous label, featuring the ‘kisses’, has been replaced by a special edition commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, adorned with white flowers on the bottle.
Sparkling wine for all occasions
João Clara’s Espumante Negra Mole Brut Nature 2016 (€40) is an ideal sparkling wine for the festive season.

This elegant sparkling wine, aged three years in the bottle and made using the traditional Champagne method, opens with toasted bread and light brioche notes, complemented by apricot and a touch of citrus that adds freshness and vibrancy.
On the palate, delicate, well-integrated bubbles make their presence felt without being aggressive.
Creamy texture and a persistent dry flavour, with bright yellow fruit notes and dried fruits adding complexity to a long finish. This sparkling wine combines sophistication with a relaxed vibe, making it suitable from an aperitif to a main course.
Altitude Negra Mole
From the hills of the Algarve comes the Adega Sampaio Schleiss Negra Mole 2023 (€16). This young producer, with roots in Monchique, has recently released this distinctive vintage.

On the nose, it offers a clean and expressive profile, with red fruit at the forefront – ripe cherry taking centre stage – accompanied by a vegetal note reminiscent of stems, yet well integrated, adding complexity and freshness.
On the palate, the elegant, refined, almost levitating character is confirmed, well integrated despite its 14.5% alcohol content. A clean, pleasant aftertaste, inviting company at the table.
