250 years: The legacy of Breguet lives on

The Swiss watchmaker presented some of its most emblematic creations in Portugal, celebrating a legacy that changed horology forever

Breguet’s watchmaking legacy is among the richest and most influential in the history of haute horlogerie, and the brand’s prominence in Western culture should never be underestimated.

Without Breguet, watches as we know them today might well have taken an entirely different path.

Abraham-Louis Breguet trained for more than a decade under the guidance of Ferdinand Berthoud, and his marriage to the daughter of a prosperous Parisian bourgeois allowed him to establish his own workshop.

An entire magazine would not be enough to cover Breguet’s achievements and ingenuity, but from his mind came the first wristwatch, the first automatic watch and even the first tourbillon.

The brand recently visited Portugal to present its latest creations as part of the celebrations marking its 250th anniversary. The national market has been steadily asserting itself within the luxury segment and, naturally, the world’s leading brands increasingly see it as a strategic destination for their products.

Through Aurélie Grognuz, Breguet’s international head of Public Relations, and Erich Jegge, brand manager for the Swiss market, the Portuguese press had the opportunity to experience several major models, including the Classique Souscription 2025, the Classique Phase de Lune 7235, the Tradition Seconde Rétrograde 7035, the Classique Tourbillon Sidéral 7255 and the Type XX Chronographe 2075

In the brand’s own words, “each piece represents a pillar of Breguet’s identity”. Yet, as in all such presentations, there are always personal favourites, and ours was undoubtedly the Classique Souscription 2025

Revisiting the concept of the subscription watch introduced by Abraham-Louis Breguet at the end of the 18th century, this watch played a crucial role in the development of his manufacture and business, and over time it has become one of the brand’s most emblematic symbols.

The new 2025 version preserves all the magic of the original model: the beauty and harmony of a single-hand display, combined with that curious appeal that feels unfamiliar at first but quickly becomes captivating.

The white Grand Feu enamel dial, the single blued-steel hand and the remarkable secret signature – meticulously engraved using a pantograph – revive the maison’s founding codes and connect today’s Breguet with its long history.

This new work of art is powered by the hand-wound calibre VS00, with a four-day power reserve.

It also introduces Breguet gold, an exclusive alloy developed by the manufacture, as well as the Quai de l’Horloge guilloché motif on the back.

Available to order, every Breguet watch is designed to last at least 250 years.
