The Algarve home of British singer Sir Cliff Richard is officially on the market with an asking price of €5.9 million

Not to be confused with the winery and wine estate of which Sir Cliff used to be a business partner and that sold last year, this is the exclusive Algarve home of the enduring Rock phenomenon who has enjoyed time in the Algarve since the late 1960s.

He originally owned an ocean-front villa near Albufeira, but in the early 1990s embarked on a project to renovate a substantial old farmhouse and estate located to the south of the town of Guia. The project took several years to complete and included the planting of a vineyard for the production of Sir Cliff’s own wine, a project which later morphed into a business, when the singer formed a business partnership with the owner of a nearby farm to launch the Adega do Cantor (Winery of the Singer).

With the nearby winery now under new ownership, the seven hectares of vineyard at Sir Cliff’s private estate continues to supply high-quality grapes for the winery. “The vineyard enhances the beautiful country views from the terraces of the house and complements the manicured Mediterranean gardens that make up the rest of the 11-hectare estate,” say estate agents Fine & Country Algarve who are selling the property. “Sir Cliff has decided to put the property up for sale as it is simply too large for his needs these days, and still plans to spend time in the Algarve.”

According to the property specialists, this “really is a unique piece of Algarve real estate”, a project that was conceived by Sir Cliff and his architects with the guiding principle of creating “a grand Portuguese country home in the traditional style and, at the same time, a home for entertaining on a grand scale”.

As they say, this is perhaps the only private property in the Algarve that has its own ballroom (“currently used as a second lounge and games room”), whilst the outdoor entertaining spaces and huge covered terraces “encourage full enjoyment of the indoor/outdoor lifestyle”. There are six en-suite bedrooms (five en-suite plus one with separate bathroom, and a small gym) in the main house, including a master suite and a further three-bedroom/two-bathroom cottage along with a two-bedroom/two-bathroom apartment, making a total of 11 bedrooms.

“The property exudes traditional Portu­guese charm with extensive use of materials such as terracotta floors, vaulted wood-beamed ceilings and hand-painted tiles,” say the estate agents. The X-factor of this property, however, must be the working windmill from which the estate takes its name, Quinta do Moinho (windmill farm), sitting proud on an extensive lawn at the entrance to the property alongside the impressive cobble-stoned driveway.
