Step back in time with battles, costumes, and sweeping views from the Algarve’s far eastern castle
From August 27-31, the town of Castro Marim once again invites visitors on a journey into the past.
Now in its 26th edition, Medieval Days is the Algarve’s largest historical re-enactment, attracting thousands of visitors each year. A true immersion into one of the most captivating and enigmatic periods of Portuguese history, the festival transforms Castro Marim into the most authentic medieval setting in the region.

Streets and alleys come alive with kings and queens, knights in shining armour, jesters and minstrels, merchants, monks, nobles, and even magical creatures.
The Castle will once again be the centre of the event, hosting numerous arts and crafts, live demonstrations of medieval skills such as craftsmanship and leather and iron production, as well as horse jousts, one of the festival’s major highlights.

The famous medieval banquets are another popular attraction, staged in an exclusive setting under the glow of torches. Guests enjoy authentic delicacies of the period, accompanied by live entertainment. For an extra-special experience, just 10 guests each evening can dine at the royal table, enjoying the evening as part of the king’s court.
There will also be a parade, one of the most anticipated moments, organised by Castro Marim Council, regarded as one of the best opportunities to immerse oneself in this universe of imagination and fantasy. Taking place on the first and last days, in the late afternoon, the parade will be a showcase for all the entertainers, extras, and Castro Marim residents who participate annually in the festival.

Inside the castle, visitors will also find exhibitions on medieval torture instruments and the First Headquarters of the Order of Christ. Meanwhile, across the festival, more than 30 national and international groups from Portugal, Italy, France, and beyond will perform, from street theatre, jugglers, fire-breathers, bagpipers, tightrope walkers, swordsmen, medieval musicians, Arab-Oriental dance, sacred music in the Castle Church, medieval masses with choir, snake charmers, falconry displays, and much more.
There will also be children’s recreation areas and activities such as workshops, games, carousels and storytelling.
Tickets are available via the BOL’s website. For more details, visit the festival’s official website.
