The first half of the year saw over one million US tourists in Portugal
Portugal continues to be a popular destination for the emerging USA tourism market, registering for the first half of the year just over one million, a number very close behind UK tourists.
Portuguese tourist accommodation establishments welcomed 1,039,354 US travellers between January and June 2024, just slightly below the 1,158,937 guests from the UK, according to data collected by the National Statistics Institute (INE), with no other country topping one million in the first six months of the year.
In just two years, there have been nearly double the number of US tourists staying at Portuguese tourist accommodations units. Additionally, the number of US tourists staying in national tourist accommodations has increased by around 15% since the first half of 2023, when there were over 902,000 US tourists.
Despite the increase, there are other countries topping the charts, with the US in 5th place, with 2.35 million overnight stays registered in the first half of the year, behind the UK, Germany, Spain and France.
