The Portuguese Grand Prix will make its return to Portimão, six years after the last Formula race at the Algarve circuit

Formula 1 will return to the Algarve in 2027, with the Portuguese Grand Prix confirmed for June 18 to 20 at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (AIA) in Portimão.

The date was confirmed with the publication of the official 2027 FIA Formula One World Championship calendar on September 16. Portugal will host the ninth round of the season, marking its first Formula 1 race since 2021. The Algarve circuit is also confirmed to host the championship again in 2028.

Opened in 2008, the AIA is one of Portugal’s leading motorsport venues, with a 4,653km circuit featuring 15 corners and significant elevation changes, earning a reputation as one of Europe’s most modern and challenging circuits.

“We finally have a date that we have been working towards for a long time. The last season held here, in 2021, left drivers, teams and the public impressed with our facilities, but above all with the excitement our circuit provides,” said Jaime Costa, CEO of the AIA.

Formula 1 previously raced at Portimão in 2020 and 2021, during the Covid-19 pandemic. The 2020 Portuguese Grand Prix became particularly significant when Lewis Hamilton secured his 92nd Grand Prix victory, surpassing Michael Schumacher’s previous record.

The 2027 race weekend will feature three days of track activity, alongside additional events and initiatives planned during the week leading up to the Grand Prix.

Tickets will go on sale on September 21 through the event’s official platform, portugalf1gp.com, in the first of four sales phases, with the initial release to include three-day general admission tickets, grandstand seating and hospitality options.

The return of Formula 1 is also expected to have a significant impact beyond the circuit. Algarve Tourism president André Gomes estimates the event could generate around €150 million for the regional economy, benefiting hotels, restaurants, transport, retail, services and local suppliers.

For Jaime Costa, the Grand Prix also presents an opportunity to encourage visitors to experience more of the region, a great meeting point of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, “with the perfect combination of beautiful beaches, gastronomy, culture and, now, the Portuguese Formula 1 Grand Prix”.
