New Vilamoura Equestrian Centre

Portugal is set to return to the international show jumping spotlight

Next year, the Algarve will take a leading role in the global equestrian scene with the reopening of the Vilamoura Equestrian Centre, now in its final development phase and set to host major international events from 2026.

Positioning Portugal as one of the world’s leading destinations for show jumping, the upgraded venue will host 11 weeks of competition and mark the debut of the region’s first CSI5* – the highest level of show jumping competition, as classified by the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI).

The Vilamoura Classic Tour starts on February 24, 2026, with three weeks of CSI3*, CSI1*, and young horse competitions. The Master Tour follows from March 17 to 22 with a CSI4*, leading up to the main event: the first Vilamoura CSI5* from March 24 to 29. It’s the first CSI5* in Portugal since Cascais six years ago.

The autumn calendar continues with Classic Tour II from October 20 to November 9, with two weeks of CSI3* and one of CSI4*. Classic Tour III follows from November 17 to December 6, ending the year with three more weeks of international competitions.

The project is a partnership between GRANDPRIX Events and the Arrow Global Group, which owns the Vilamoura complex and several local tourism facilities. Its aim is to make Vilamoura a global reference for equestrian sport by combining top-quality facilities with the Algarve’s unique lifestyle and climate.

According to the organisers, “The Vilamoura Classic represents a new chapter for European show jumping and for Portugal in particular. We want this to be a destination where sport and quality of life are lived year-round.”

The upgraded centre will feature three new ebb-and-flow sand arenas, each over 6,500m², and a large grass arena measuring 14,000m². Other key additions include four undulating warm-up arenas, Europe’s largest covered free-training arena at over 6,000m², and a state-of-the-art veterinary clinic. The enhancements also add over 1,000 new fixed stables, three premium hospitality areas with a VIP space, a 3km horse path, and a 30,000m² grass free-training area set within a natural reserve.

“These upgrades mean the Vilamoura Equestrian Centre will exceed the expectations of riders, horses, and spectators alike, offering an unparalleled equestrian experience as well as a prime sponsorship opportunity for local and international brands,” said Vilamoura World, the resort’s master developer.
