Wild presence

ArtCatto Gallery, in Loulé, will showcase the works of South African painter Darryn Eggleton alongside Annalù Boeretto, Erika Toliusis and Jürgen Lingl in a collective exhibition running from April 2 to June 15.

Darryn Eggleton, whose work is deeply rooted in his early connection to the natural world was born in South Africa and raised on the edge of the Kruger National Park. He developed a fascination with wildlife from an early age, which greatly influenced his practice today.

The Watcher

The painter creates highly detailed animal portraits that isolate each subject against a single-colour background for a striking effect. With only subtle reflections in the eyes hinting at their surroundings, the animals appear almost suspended in space, creating an immediate and powerful presence.

Working in oil on linen, Eggleton builds his compositions through careful observation and research, often gathering reference material during field trips before translating it into the studio.

His attention to texture and detail, particularly in the rendering of fur, gives each piece a remarkable sense of realism. Recognised internationally, his work has been exhibited in cities such as London, New York and Singapore, and is held in private collections around the world.
