A celebration of colour and form inspired by the Algarve and Alentejo

Set in the countryside between Boliqueime and Paderne, Corte Real Gallery is presenting the works of Portuguese contemporary artist Florbela Mendes, whose abstracts and mixed-media pieces draw strong inspiration from the Algarve’s natural light and colour.

Her expressive paintings are inspired by the light and colours of the Algarve, featuring reds, greens and blues, brought together with confident brushwork. The beautiful coastline and the open skies are also very present in her work.

Mendes also explores more geometric compositions, using circular forms, layering and interlocking shapes to create a sense of internal space through patterned abstractions inspired by the region’s landscape, ochre cliffs and golden sands.

Her work is equally influenced by the beauty of the Alentejo, where she was born, with elements of flat, open land and intense heat.

Côrte-Real Gallery is open from Thursday to Sunday, between 11.30am and 4.30pm. From the villages of Boliqueime and Paderne, visitors can follow the “Galeria” signs.

Visitors can expect more than just paintings, with the space offering a carefully curated selection of fine ceramics and decorative art.
