“The Late Summer Girls” reimagines cinema idols through beautifully crafted montage
Côrte-Real Gallery, located between Boliqueime and Paderne, is currently showcasing the works of German artist Mari Arp. “The Late Summer Girls” is the newest work by the artist, who uses a montage technique to give Silver Screen idols a new life.
Arp’s creative process begins with research into billboards and movie magazines, looking into images of actresses, models and pin-up girls. These are then transformed into oversized montages, blending their flawless appearance with graphic backgrounds and layers of overpainting.
To bring the painting to life, Arp also incorporates acrylic, charcoal, and oil pastels before finishing each work with several coats of varnish for both protection and a lustrous finish.
Born in 1963 in Preetz, northern Germany, Mari Arp was inspired early on by her father’s carpentry workshop and began experimenting with painting and graphic work. A turning point came in 2001 during a trip to Brazil, where she discovered new materials and techniques that shaped her artistic journey.
Her work has since evolved from bold portraits of Hollywood divas to more recent abstract pieces that embrace imperfection and transformation. In 2018 and 2019, her works appeared at the Discovery Art Fair in Frankfurt and Cologne, as well as at numerous local exhibitions in the Rhine-Main region, in Germany. Currently, Mari Arp is a permanent artist at the Côrte-Real Gallery and at the Arp Galerie in Hanau, Germany.
Côrte-Real Gallery is open from Thursday to Sunday, between 11.30am and 4.30pm. From the villages of Boliqueime and Paderne, visitors can follow the “Galeria” signs.
