Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden pairs heritage, art and atmosphere with a serene courtyard setting
Described as “a discreet oasis of comfort and quiet luxury in the heart of Lisbon”, Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden is a boutique hotel tucked just off Avenida da Liberdade.
A true gem, it is a veritable haven of style and sophistication that feels as if you are stepping back in time to the Golden Age of travel. It is all down to the details: the fact that guests are given an actual physical room key rather than the standard electronic card sets the tone. Valverde speaks of refined elegance and class, reminiscent of a London private members’ club – an exclusive townhouse, if you like.

The hotel opened its doors in 2014 and remains the only Relais & Châteaux property in central Lisbon.
It features 48 rooms and suites, along with refined living areas and a wellness space that includes a gym, treatment room and heated outdoor pool. But the focal point is the inner courtyard garden.
A lush sanctuary where greenery is tastefully punctuated by burgundy elements such as the planting and tiled pond, the entire design is carefully considered and harmonious.

Bougain
The architecture and interiors are by José Pedro Vieira and Diogo Rosa Lã of Bastir architecture studio, who were responsible for the full restoration of the original 1889 townhouse. They successfully retained its character whilst transforming the property into a contemporary, chic boutique hotel.
One notable feature is the combination of modern furniture design with antique pieces, alongside an art collection and decorative items that reflect Portuguese heritage and culture.

More and more leading hotels recognise the importance of artwork as an essential part of the overall experience.
At Valverde, the collection includes engravings by Giovanni Battista Piranesi and pieces by Jean-Baptiste Pillement. Portuguese art is represented through graphic works by Paula Rego and Vieira da Silva, alongside paintings by acclaimed artist Augusto Barros and a series of ceramic works by Jorge Barradas.

These significant artworks by important artists highlight the value of thoughtful art curation as an essential part of the design and integral element of the hotel’s identity and atmosphere.
This ‘homely’ feeling is further enhanced by the ‘living rooms’ on the reception floor – Sala Valverde and Sala Jardim.

The former overlooks Avenida da Liberdade and evokes the feel of an old visiting room or quiet reading salon, making it the perfect setting for a refined afternoon tea. Sala Jardim opens onto a wide terrace which overlooks the garden, ideal for business meetings, private events or even a pre-dinner cocktail.

The bedrooms exude old-world charm within a contemporary framework. Muted wall tones are contrasted with lighter fabrics, the mustard yellow of an unusual double armchair, artwork in gilded frames, parquet wooden flooring, and modernist-retro desks and tables, all reflecting the care and thought that has gone into the design.

This colour palette is enhanced by warm, subdued lighting. The black-and-white marbled bathrooms feature a proper old-fashioned bathtub, a rarity these days. Rooms facing Avenida da Liberdade offer small free-standing balconies, perfect for sipping a morning coffee whilst watching the world go by.
The avenue itself is home to luxury shopping, high-end brands and fine-dining destinations, including the JNcQUOI group of restaurants.
After a spot of retail therapy, guests can unwind in the wellness space or enjoy the heated outdoor pool on an elevated terrace, framed by greenery and defined by elegant contrasts between metallic surfaces, black tiles and traditional Lisbon Lioz stone.
Since opening, Valverde Lisboa Hotel & Garden has received numerous national and international awards. In 2025, it was named Europe’s Leading Luxury Boutique Hotel at the World Travel Awards for the sixth consecutive year.

Bougain
The restaurant and garden bar on the lower ground floor is home to Bougain. This independent, Mediterranean-inspired restaurant forms part of the São Bento Group, founded in 2022 when Miguel Garcia acquired the iconic Café de São Bento opposite the Assembly of the Republic.
It quickly became known for serving some of the best steak in town. In 2023, the group opened the original Bougain in a historic family home in the heart of Cascais.

The following year saw the opening of Corleone Ristorante al Mare at Casa da Villa, serving classic Italian cuisine overlooking Cascais Bay. That same year, the group also relaunched the legendary Snob Bar, originally founded in 1964 and once frequented by a heady mix of politicians, journalists, intellectuals and artists; all no doubt enjoying the famed Snob steak alongside lively banter and debate.
Last year, the portfolio expanded further with Café de São Bento in the historic centre of Cascais and Bougain at 164 Avenida da Liberdade.
Bougain Avenida brings some of the iconic dishes from Cascais to Lisbon. Starters include grouper and shrimp bouillabaisse, spicy tuna tartare and scallop carpaccio.
Signature mains feature Arroz de Carabineiros e Citrinos (red prawn rice with citrus), red mullet with leek purée, sea bass en papillote and, although not strictly Mediterranean, the restaurant’s popular Beef Wellington.

Other notable dishes include the group’s renowned steaks, such as Ribeye Maturado (grilled ribeye with asparagus and truffled mashed potatoes) and the classic Steak au Poivre. Chef João Santos continues the legacy of the original Bougain, with a strong focus on seasonal, high-quality ingredients.
The high-ceilinged interior dining room (where the hotel breakfast is served), has a distinguished feel, with British racing green décor lending an air of heritage and sophistication. Framed artwork, 1960s fashion photography and graphic cocktail advertisements add to the retro aesthetic.

Cocktails are central to the Bougain experience, and the new bar, crafted in Guatemala green marble, offers house creations such as the Ginger Basil Smash, Passion Affair and Pink Sour, alongside timeless tipples such as Dry Martini and Negroni.
The wine cellar is well stocked, with over 130 labels from across Portugal and international selections from France and Italy.
It is in the secluded garden that Bougain truly offers something special. The identity is a natural extension of its older sibling in Cascais, with the same elements, materials and colours adapted to this tranquil urban setting. On mild, pleasant evenings, the space comes alive with a vibrant atmosphere, as guests enjoy fine food and drinks in this verdant courtyard.
Hotel Valverde and Bougain are distinct yet complementary. For hotel guests, Bougain is an added luxury, just an elevator ride away. For the restaurant, it represents a prime location on Lisbon’s most exclusive avenue.
