Located on Caneiros beach, between Carvoeiro and Ferragudo, Rei das Praias wins over the heart of anyone who tries their delicious dishes. Since 1976, the flavours of the Algarve have been served here and paid homage to in a unique way, in a space that couldn’t be more peaceful and welcoming. Upon arrival, you are invited to relax and enjoy an unforgettable meal with stunning ocean views, as the paradisiacal scenery and sea breeze immediately whet your appetite and lift your mood.
It was David Encarnação Martinho who created this restaurant, which is now run by his son, Luís Martinho. Both from the Algarve, they share a dedication and professionalism that is reflected in the satisfaction of customers from all over the world. Luís, who has a degree in Management from the University of the Algarve, has always helped his father in the business, starting out by selling ice creams and, two years later, moving on to waiting tables.
His passion for hospitality and affection for Rei das Praias drove Luís to devote himself to the business to this day, always ensuring a family atmosphere, with personalised service and fresh produce of the highest quality. “I want customers to enjoy the moment, the beach and the sun, to release their stress and have a unique experience,” shared the owner.
The freshness of the fish and seafood combined with the privileged location make this the ideal place for a memorable meal, whether in the dining room with its adjoining terrace or upstairs on the lounge terrace. The sea view is unforgettable, as is the opportunity to taste the true essence of the Algarve, which translates into traditional delicacies such as Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato, Camarão à Guilho, Perceves, Cavala Alimada and a wide variety of grilled fish.
The Arroz de Marisco (seafood rice stew and the Carabineiros (scarlet prawns) and Camarão Tigres (tiger prawns) are the suggestions from the expert himself. Revealing that he can’t choose between striped prawns, carabineiros and spider crabs as his favourite seafood, Luís pointed out that the produce they use is all local, both the fish and shellfish coming from the Sagres fish stalls and the vegetables sourced from Portimão Market. This is why the menu is constantly adapted to prioritise seasonal produce.
The excellent selection of wines and champagnes from around the world is another reason why this restaurant stands out. Luís’ appreciation of local grape varieties and his adventurous spirit led him to embark on a new adventure: planting a vineyard and deciding to become a wine producer. Although the Rei das Praias label has existed for 20 years, the owner’s ambition is that it will no longer be bottled in various chains and will become its own product.
The friendliness, attention and professionalism of the multicultural team of around 30 employees, together with the relaxed yet refined atmosphere, bring lightness to the table, which is also felt through the decoration with ropes, plants, thatch pieces and wooden tables and chairs, painted in shades of white; the perfect setting for admiring a sunset that looks like a painting.
DJ nights and live music twice a week during the summer months bring entertainment to Rei das Praias, as do the parties that the restaurant organises and promotes on its website.
The space, open from 12.30pm to 10pm, is limited and very crowded, so it is best to book in advance and ensure that you enjoy the best that Caneiros beach has to offer.
To enrich your experience even more, you can also book sun loungers on the beach in advance, part of the concession owned by Luís Martinho, who also owns Caneiros Luxury House & Suites, a boutique hotel with 18 luxurious rooms, a spa, a champagne bar and a wine cellar, located just a few metres from the beach.
