Discover signature spa rituals inspired by the Algarve’s natural surroundings, from heated quartz and Mediterranean botanicals to citrus and almond oils and marine treatments
In the Algarve, five of the region’s top resorts have created signature rituals that bring together well-being and a sense of place.
Designed to go beyond a conventional massage, they turn an hour or two into a genuine opportunity to take a break. From the warmth and texture of quartz to Mediterranean aromas, Algarve oranges, L’Occitane almond treatments, and Thalassa marine ingredients, each ritual offers a different interpretation of Portugal and its natural surroundings.
Despite their different techniques and intentions, they all encourage guests to slow down and become more aware of sensations that often go unnoticed.
Staple Algarve ingredients, Mediterranean flora, and the region’s relationship with the Atlantic are explored through experiences centred on balancing body and mind and the importance of taking time to disconnect.
Vila Vita Spa by Sisley Paris, Vila Vita Parc
Perched on the cliffs above the Atlantic, Vila Vita Spa by Sisley Paris is home to one of Portugal’s most distinctive wellness rituals: ‘Golden Quartz’.

For 90 minutes, the traditional massage table is replaced by a bed filled with small, heated quartz crystals.
The sensation evokes sand warmed by the Algarve sun, whilst the heat helps relax the muscles and creates a sense of physical grounding.

The therapist combines personalised massage techniques with heated herbal compresses and the resonance of Tibetan singing bowls, whose sound and vibrations encourage a meditative state.
Golden Quartz “was created from a desire to offer something truly distinctive through an experience that goes beyond a conventional massage,” explains spa manager Judith Gerls.

It combines “therapeutic touch with the comforting warmth of quartz, the vibration of Tibetan singing bowls resonating through the body, and the relaxing effect of sound, creating a deeply sensory journey”.
The heated bed also provides “the sensation of lying on a warm beach, surrounded by the heat of the sand, something that is both comforting and can also have a therapeutic effect on body and mind”.

Named World’s Best Spa Signature Treatment at the 2021 World Spa Awards, the ritual stimulates circulation, promotes metabolic detoxification, and restores a sense of calm.
Soma Spa, Domes Lake Algarve
Soma Spa presents ‘The Botanical Garden of Portugal’, a 90-minute experience inspired by Lisbon’s botanical gardens and the plant life of the Mediterranean landscape.

It begins by awakening the senses with an aromatic infusion of rosemary, thyme, basil, and lemon: the first two bring fresh, purifying notes, basil adds a herbal dimension, and lemon provides an invigorating touch.
This is followed by a relaxing full-body massage, with pressure tailored to the client, to relieve tension and help restore neuromuscular balance. The experience concludes with a revitalising facial booster designed to restore radiance and tone to the skin.

In creating an experience with “a genuine connection to Portugal”, the history of Lisbon’s botanical gardens, “as places of discovery, knowledge, and appreciation of plants”, provided the inspiration, according to spa manager Daniel Serpa.
“The aromas evoke a Mediterranean garden and Portuguese nature, whilst the touch of the massage helps guests disconnect from the outside world and enter a state of deep relaxation,” he explains.
Sal Maré Spa, Wyndham Grand Carvoeiro Algarve
At Sal Maré Spa, the two-hour ‘Algarve Energy Ritual’ celebrates the region’s identity through a series of body treatments.

Inspired by the light, aromas, and agricultural richness of southern Portugal, the experience begins with an exfoliation using crushed local sea salt, fresh orange zest, and sweet almond oil to renew the skin and stimulate microcirculation.
This is followed by a blend of orange powder and neroli (orange blossom) hydrosol, applied as a nourishing, antioxidant body wrap with a citrus aroma. Whilst the skin absorbs the vitamin C-rich treatment, techniques inspired by Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi massage are used, with gentle, rhythmic movements that mimic the motion of the sea.

The ritual concludes with a personalised massage using aromatic citrus oil.
The focus is on “a revitalising element that conveys energy, vitality, and a sense of well-being”, explains spa manager Abel Correia, emphasising that “oranges are part of our everyday lives and our connection to the Algarve”.

He describes the approach as holistic because “it is not simply about physical touch or massage technique, but the entire experience that makes the difference – the aromas, textures, gestures, atmosphere, and the intention to provide a genuine moment of self-care”.
Spa by L’Occitane, Bela Vista Hotel & Spa
Overlooking Praia da Rocha, Bela Vista Hotel & Spa offers several signature treatments using products from French brand L’Occitane.

The 60-minute ‘Almond Detox Balance’ combines circulatory relief with comforting textures through rhythmic, flowing movements inspired by lymphatic drainage techniques. The continuous movements stimulate circulation and help eliminate excess fluid and toxins, easing feelings of heaviness and fatigue.

The massage uses L’Occitane Supple Skin Oil, rich in almond and camellia oils and formulated to help restore the skin’s hydrolipidic barrier and improve elasticity.

“L’Occitane developed this treatment to promote a general sense of well-being whilst also helping to relieve specific symptoms, such as tired, swollen legs,” explains spa manager Mariana Fernandes.
Its focus on skin quality and elasticity is one of the reasons the ritual is so popular, often chosen after travelling, during periods of physical recovery, or by those looking for a lighter-feeling silhouette and silky-smooth skin.
Wellness Club, Vilalara Grand Hotel Algarve
Described as the only centre in Portugal entirely dedicated to thalassotherapy, the Wellness Club at Vilalara Grand Hotel Algarve offers a 90-minute experience that incorporates the ocean’s remineralising properties into a series of skin and body treatments.

The ‘Vilalara Ritual’ begins with an exfoliation using Thalion marine calcium and magnesium to remove dead skin cells and even out the skin’s texture.
This is followed by Manto Marinho, a body wrap using active ingredients derived from algae, marine mud, calcium, or magnesium, before a final massage with marine magnesium balm, gentle stretches, and targeted pressure to release muscular tension.

“The Vilalara Ritual was born from a desire to create a treatment that captured the very essence of Vilalara: the relationship between the ocean, nature and well-being.
Its inspiration is deeply connected to the history of our Thalassa, which pioneered thalassotherapy in Portugal,” explains spa & wellness manager Bernardo Moreno, as he highlights the distinctive nature of the elements used and the combination of marine ingredients, minerals, and techniques that create a direct connection between body and ocean.
