That which is perhaps Mercedes’ most iconic car of the last 20 years now has a fully electric version
It was inevitable, but it is still a moment worth noting: the G-Class, perhaps Mercedes’ most iconic car of the last 20 years, now has a fully electric version.
The new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology is a true technological behemoth, with one engine per wheel for superior traction and overwhelming performances.
Maximum combined power can reach 432Kw (587hp) and a massive 1,164Nm of torque. The G 580 has various systems that allow it to electronically simulate the presence of gearboxes, differential locks and torque vectoring.
The 116kWh battery has 216 cells and three cooling platforms, with a maximum range of 473km. It can be charged using alternating or direct current, with a maximum power of 11kW and 200kW respectively – you can restore 80% charge in just 32 minutes.
Visually, the electric G is very similar to the petrol versions, with some detail differences in the bonnet, some trim and a new A-pillar for better aerodynamic efficiency.
In the cabin too, Mercedes has opted to keep the same layout, updating the interior systems to the needs of an electrically powered car. Totally different, but the same old icon.
