Algarve wins once again the title of World’s Leading Beach Destination

For the second year in a row, the Algarve has been named the World’s Leading Beach Destination at the World Travel Awards 2021, overcoming stiff competition from other famous beach destinations such as Cancun, Jamaica, Maldives, Thailand and Zanzibar.

The winners were announced on Wednesday (December 15), with Portugal bringing home a total of 12 coveted tourism ‘Oscars’ – two fewer than last year.

The other Algarve winner was the Conrad Algarve resort, which was named the World’s Leading Luxury Leisure Resort.

Elsewhere in Portugal, Madeira was named the World’s Leading Island Destination for the seventh year in a row, while Passadiços do Paiva, the famous walkways in Arouca, were hailed the World’s Leading Adventure Tourist Attraction for the fourth straight year.

Portugal’s national airline TAP brought home two accolades (World’s Leading Airline to Africa and World’s Leading Airline to South America), Amazing Evolution received the title of World’s Leading Boutique Hotel Operator and Parques de Sintra was named World’s Leading Conservation Company.

Last but not least, Dark Sky Alqueva received the World’s Responsible Tourism Award, L’AND Vineyards was again elected the World’s Leading Wine Region Hotel, Olissippo Lapa Palace Hotel was named the World’s Leading Classic Hotel and Pestana Porto Santo All Inclusive was singled out as the World’s Leading Luxury Beach & Lifestyle Resort.

Algarve wins World’s Best Beach Destination just after winning Europe’s Leading Beach Destination

Meanwhile, Algarve tourism chief João Fernandes has celebrated the region’s latest achievement, which comes just a few months after the Algarve had already been named Europe’s Leading Beach Destination.

Describing the accolade as a “great source of pride”, which gives the Algarve even more responsibility, he said the merit goes to the region’s natural assets as well as the “work of all the women and men who, every day, contribute to the quality of tourism in the Algarve”.

With the pandemic making travellers more and more demanding about the destinations they choose to visit, Fernandes believes this award will act as a “brand of world-renowned prestige”.

“This award will strengthen the Algarve’s added value as a destination that is capable of responding to the demands of today’s tourists,” the tourism boss said.
The World Travel Awards were established in 1993 to “acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all key sectors of the travel, tourism and hospitality industries”.
