The Jack Nicklaus Signature course returns with rebuilt greens and upgraded facilities as the eastern Algarve resort enters a new phase

Monte Rei Golf & Country Club has reopened its North Course following a six-month renovation designed to restore and enhance one of Portugal’s best-known golf courses.

The Jack Nicklaus Signature course reopened this September after an extensive programme of works covering the greens, bunkers, irrigation system, buggy paths and practice facilities. Several tees have also been enlarged, whilst the practice areas have benefited from updated facilities, and maintenance operations have also been modernised with quieter and more sustainable equipment.

The renovation was carried out in close collaboration with Jack Nicklaus Design and overseen by DETAILS – Hospitality, Sports & Leisure, which manages Monte Rei as part of its growing portfolio of golf and hospitality assets in Portugal.

Rather than altering the course, the project focused on preserving the original design whilst improving playing conditions. “Monte Rei is one of the most iconic courses in Portuguese and European golf, and a must-play for anyone who loves the game,” said Nuno Sepúlveda, co-CEO of DETAILS. “It was already a great design, so it was important that the work focused on renewing rather than reinventing it.”

Dirk Bouts, senior designer at Nicklaus Design, said the works had restored many of the elements that make the course distinctive whilst protecting Jack Nicklaus’ original vision.

“The widening of several tees, the renovation and restoration of the greens and bunkers, together with extensive clearing work across the property, have made a noticeable difference, ensuring that the integrity and character of the original design have been preserved,” he said.

The reopening comes as Monte Rei begins a broader phase of investment. Plans already announced for the resort include a new Nobu destination featuring a 100-room hotel, signature restaurant and branded residences.

For DETAILS, the reopening marks the beginning of a new chapter for the resort.
