Open Studios Faro returns with more than 80 artists from October 8-11

Four-day event opens studios and creative spaces across Faro, inviting the public to discover artists and their work

Faro will become an open-air showcase for contemporary art this week as Open Studios Faro returns from October 8-11 (Thursday to Sunday), bringing together more than 80 artists across a variety of spaces throughout the city.

Now in its sixth edition, the free event invites residents and visitors inside artists’ studios, galleries, associations and other creative spaces, offering an opportunity to discover not only finished works but also the techniques and processes behind them.

The programme begins on Thursday, October 8 at 5pm with the official opening and Esta Rua, Outra Rua, a photographic project by Vasco Célio on Rua Ferreira Neto. A temporary photography studio will invite the public to have their portrait taken, with the resulting images displayed on the walls of two vacant buildings.

Friday’s programme includes Crochet Fora do Comum at Faro Municipal Library, where participants will work together to create a crocheted poem inspired by Faro-born poet António Ramos Rosa. Annegret Kellner’s exhibition O Jardim Que Não Vemos also opens at GAMA RAMA.

The main open-studio programme takes place on Saturday and Sunday, when participating studios welcome visitors from 10am-1pm and 2pm-6pm. Guided tours and workshops are also planned, with all activities free, although some require advance registration.

Highlights include a collaborative family painting workshop, visits to Faro Municipal Museum’s storage and restoration areas and Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde’s Nimbus project, featuring his celebrated ephemeral indoor clouds.

The University of Algarve will also open the working spaces used by its Visual Arts degree programme, allowing visitors to meet students and discover their projects and creative processes.

Open Studios Faro concludes at 7pm on Sunday at S.R.A.F. “Os Artistas”.
