One of the biggest international sporting events returns on February 19
Attracting “thousands of visitors” every year, the famous Volta ao Algarve (or Algarve Tour) returns on February 19 for its 51st edition. This year, the competition’s route has been revamped to showcase the region’s iconic scenery, enhancing the sporting spectacle even further.
The competition will cross the region, from the coast to the hills, providing a unique sight for thousands of spectators and cycling enthusiasts around the world, promoting the region globally.
The race will begin in Portimão, covering almost 750 kilometres over five stages, with highlights including the sprint finishes in Lagos and Tavira, as well as the challenging ascent to Fóia (in Monchique). Other iconic moments will feature the classic-style stage to Faro and the individual time trial at the top of Malhão, where the title favourites will fight for victory.

Volta ao Algarve 2025 routes
In addition to the main competition, the Algarve Granfondo 2025 will also take place on February 22. The open, non-competitive event will allow participants to explore some of the most authentic landscapes in the Algarve hinterland. Participants in the race will be able to choose between two routes – the 130km Granfondo, for more experienced cyclists, and the more accessible 90km Mediofondo. Both have timed segments to increase the challenge and provide an even more immersive experience.
With the Algarve region establishing itself as a premier destination for sports tourism – hosting cycling events, the MotoGP Grand Prix, international golf tournaments, and nautical competitions – it is increasingly extending its appeal throughout the year.
According to the President of the Algarve Tourism Board, André Gomes, the Volta ao Algarve “is not just a major sporting event, it is a privileged showcase for the diversity and quality of the Algarve”. He adds, “The race shows the world that the Algarve is much more than just sun and beaches, it is a region with stunning landscapes, excellent infrastructure, and a unique capacity to host world-class sporting events all year round”, as shared to the press.
André Gomes highlights that the “combination of sport, tourism, and sustainability” is driving the Algarve towards “a more competitive and balanced future”, solidifying its status as a “benchmark destination for sustainable sports tourism”.
