Belgian hospitality brand theAddresses creates quiet luxury holiday homes mixing Algarve soul with contemporary design

Algarve soul

On a cobbled street in the centre of a fishing town, set among a peaceful orange grove, or just a few steps from the wild Ria Formosa, theAddresses’ stylish holiday homes are all located in authentic Algarvian locations.

Combining the region’s rich heritage with modern design, superb settings, a luxury concierge service and curated travel tips, these unique addresses offer the ideal combination for Portuguese holidays with a luxurious “home away from home” feel.

Casa Quatro

Created in 2021 by Bert Jeuris and Ludovic Beuntwo Belgian entrepreneurs keen to share an ever-growing passion for Portugal and its culture with like-minded friends and guests – theAddresses is a design-minded hospitality brand.

On the constant lookout for remarkable houses with unique stories in traditional settings, Bert and Ludovic set up camp in the Eastern Algarve, where they have invested in derelict properties and turned them into dream holiday destinations. Today, their portfolio features four rejuvenated houses, with two more in the pipeline.

Named and numbered in the order in which they came to be, the holiday homes were designed by architecture studio Atelier Rua and their stylish interiors, against white and beige backdrops, were created by Studio Stories. Each one has a unique personality and tells an intriguing story. Casa Um was once a shepherd’s cottage in the countryside, Casa Dois was a fisherman’s warehouse in the port of Olhão, Casa Três was a merchant’s home close to the Spanish border, and Casa Quatro was a former trading house built next to São Brás de Alportel’s cathedral.

Their common thread is a sober and contemporary feel that embodies the Algarvian soul, with details of bygone eras mixed with modern design. Whitewashed walls contrast with pops of greenery, whilst modern furniture and lighting fixtures are combined with Portuguese pottery and iconic Santa Catarina terracotta tiles. The result is a series of “fresh-feeling”, self-catering holiday homes exuding understated luxury and offering a five-star hotel service.

The Belgian duo, who has been coming to Portugal for over 20 years, has obviously added a few personal touches. A passionate wine enthusiast, Bert founded The Portugal Collection, an import company that supplies the best Portuguese wines to top restaurants in Belgium, several of which are available in each house’s wine cellar. Meanwhile, Ludovic, a Creative Director in the music and entertainment world, has lent his incisive artistic eye to theAddresses’ design team.

Casa Quatro

The collection’s first project, Casa Um, located in Tavira, was a little 19th-century farmhouse set within a vast property where some 300 sheep graze on the surrounding hills and orange groves. The large minimalist home built on two levels mirrors and reinterprets the Algarve’s traditional visual, physical, and spatial architectural archetypes. The top half, built on the ruin, houses the common areas, whilst a cluster of newly built staggered boxes features four en-suite bedrooms and a landscaped roof terrace with a heated pool.

In the port town of Olhão, known as the capital of the Ria Formosa, hidden in a narrow back alley, Casa Dois is the perfect base to explore the natural park, its lagoons and sandy islands whilst having all the advantages of being located in a charismatic and lively city. This former fisherman’s warehouse has been converted into a modern townhouse with tall ceilings that give the house an airy, modern and relaxed atmosphere. The two-bedroom property with an open-space living area features a private indoor patio with an intimate heated plunge pool, which was once a fish tank. From the patio, a steep spiral staircase leads to the rooftop terrace with views of the city’s rooftops and the serene Ria Formosa.

Casa Três

Casa Três is located in Vila Real de Santo António, on the border with Spain. This ancient merchant’s house, close to the town’s historical pedestrian centre, has been renovated into a spacious property with an exquisite private interior patio with a large outdoor-dining table, citrus trees, an intimate heated plunge pool and multiple large roof terraces. It features three king-size double bedrooms, each with luxury bedding and en-suite bathrooms with walk-in showers, as do all the other ‘Casas’.

The first to be set in the interior Algarve, Casa Quatro is located in São Brás de Alportel, a quiet and peaceful hill town. Adjacent to the town’s cathedral, the former 1937 trading house, one of the oldest standing houses in town, was transformed into a holiday home where guests live and breathe the local way of life. The modern open living space showcases remnants of the past, such as large archways and an ancient vaulted red brick ceiling. Featuring design furniture and unique contemporary art pieces, the decoration is sober and inviting, as it is in the large modern kitchen and the four spacious en-suite bedrooms. The intimate rooftop terrace and the interior patio, with its divine swimming pool and relaxing ‘pit’ with large stripy green and white cushions, are inviting chilling areas.

Casa Um

An increasingly growing collection, theAddresses has recently got licenses to renovate what will be Casa Cinco, a small three-bedroom house with a rooftop pool in Cacela Velha, just 50 metres from the Ria Formosa, and Casa Seis, which, according to theAddresses’ concierge Mário Rui, “will be the most beautiful yet”.

In charge of guests’ comfort during their stay, Mário is the perfect host. His inside local knowledge enables him to curate every experience to each guest’s taste, booking private transport, suggesting authentic restaurants and bars, organising soothing massages on a rooftop terrace, hiring a private chef, planning cultural visits, hiking and cycling tours, or an adventurous boat trip to a desert island.

Casa Quatro

Passionate about the region and its products, theAddresses team also aims to help local commerce and producers. In each house, guests will find locally sourced products such as organic soaps, locally made olive oil, Flôr de Sal (fleur de sel) from Castro Marim and a selection of Portuguese wines. There are also signature beach towels and a selection of handpicked books, all of which guests can purchase to take home.

Rental prices start from €1,200 per week in the low season, with bookings from Saturday to Saturday.
