PRIMITIVO.TAVIRA

A new restaurant in Tavira, a fresh guide for foodies, and the Michelin Gala promise to bring exciting culinary experiences and high-quality dining options this year

Flaming it up

Tavira boasts a new restaurant where every dish is cooked in a wood-fired oven. Chef Tiago Guerreiro’s Primitivo, on Praça Dr Antonio Padinha, brings a fresh concept to the Algarve, where flames play a crucial role.

The menu starts with corn on the cob (€6) and roasted pumpkin cream (€4). Fish selections include sea bass with a butter sauce and roasted vegetables (€16) or sea bass with a tomato Bearnaise sauce and roasted vegetables (€16).

For meat dishes, the chef highlights the grilled Iberian Pork secretos (€16.50), the Chef’s Cut, a daily offering of top Portuguese meat (€22), or a T-Bone steak served with oven rice for two (€48).

Repsol Guide returns

The Repsol Guide is returning to Portugal this year to celebrate the best of national gastronomy.

The renowned Guide will distinguish top restaurants by awarding one, two, or three suns to establishments that meet a series of requirements defined in partnership with the prestigious Culinary Basque Centre.

A team of more than 20 specialised inspectors is already assessing establishments from the north to the south of the country, including the islands (Azores and Madeira). The guide’s digital version, focusing on the Eating and Traveling sections, is available at www.guiarepsol.com.

Michelin stars, up north

The much-anticipated second edition of the all-Portuguese Michelin Guide Gala will be held in Porto on February 25 at the Alfândega do Porto Congress Centre.

This year, television personality Marta Leite Castro will present the star-studded event during which the new stars from the national gastronomic scene will be announced.

During the evening, some 500 guests will be treated to a unique dinner prepared by nine chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants in the Porto and the North Region, coordinated by Rui Paula (Casa de Chá da Boa Nova, Leça da Palmeira), Ricardo Costa (The Yeatman, Vila Nova de Gaia) and Vítor Matos (Antiqvvm, Porto), who lead the region’s two-star restaurants.
