There have been a lot of exciting new developments and announcements, including new airline routes, accommodation options, and more
Double charm from Hilton in Lisbon
June saw the opening of new property in Lisbon’s trendy Cais do Sodré. The Duo Hotel Lisbon, Curio Collection by Hilton is a boutique-style hotel with 75 rooms that takes its name from the two buildings that make up the property; one old and refurbished, the other new.
A particularly attractive feature of the property is the spacious courtyard with a feature fountain that separates the two buildings, creating a delightful space for outdoor drinks and dining as well as for small events.
Azores links US, Canada and Algarve
The new Azores Airlines route linking Ponta Delgada and Faro launched in June with the goal of bringing passengers from the US and Canada to the Algarve.
This is the first regular route linking the Azores to the Algarve region and in summer there are connections on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, departing Faro at 13.25pm and arriving in Ponta Delgada at 3.05pm.
In winter, flights leave the Azores at 9am and arrive in Faro at 12.25pm. These schedules offer connections to Boston and New York, Toronto and Montreal.
New Marriot hotel announced at Verdelago Resort
Construction of a new €52.5 million five-star hotel has begun at Castro Marim’s Verdelago Resort. The 197-room Marriott hotel – which will feature six secluded suites set within the resort’s pine forest – is set to open in 2027.
The hotel will have a “strong sustainability component” in terms of its construction, architecture, energy and water supply and future tourist operation.
Future plans for the resort also include a multi-filed sports complex, a pump track for BMX/BTT, several walking and cycling paths totalling around 7km through cork oaks and pine trees, temporary ponds and a lagoon, an orchard and garden with local products, and an equestrian centre with horses for rides within the resort.
New Ryanair routes
The Irish low-cost airline has announced 14 new routes to Portugal.
The destinations are Alicante, Stockholm, Belfast, Rome, Ibiza, Madrid, Pisa, Poznan and Tangier, which will be operating on a double schedule.
In total, there are now 170 routes in Portugal promoted by Europe’s leading airline, which translates into an increase in traffic to 13.5 million passengers a year.
Faro has also seen some additions, with new destinations such as Budapest, Krakow, Marrakech and Norwich, totalling 49 routes at the airport throughout the high season.
Portimão Marina to welcome superyachts
A project to expand Portimão Marina and create 30 new mooring berths for superyachts was recently announced.
With an estimated investment of €12 million to €14 million, the project – entitled ‘Projeto de Segurança, Inovação e Otimização da Marina de Portimão’ (Portimão Marina Safety, Innovation and Optimisation Project) – will also involve other works considered vital to the improvement of the marina.
A new south breakwater will feature 12 berths for boats up to 20 metres, whilst the larger north breakwater will boast 18 berths for boats up to 45 metres.
In other words, the marina will finally be able to welcome the dozens of superyachts that every year show an interest in stopping over in Portimão but end up “travelling to other marinas along the Mediterranean which have the capacity to welcome them”, the project study says.
Jet2 announces new flights to Faro
British low-cost airline Jet2.com and tour operator Jet2holidays will have more flights to Faro from different airports.
After inaugurating a new operational base at Bournemouth Airport in the UK, more flights to the Algarve have been announced.
The capacity of flights from Edinburgh and Glasgow, in Scotland, to Faro airport will also increase from October and the news doesn’t stop there. Jet2 plans to have up to four flights a week from Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport to Faro.
