This year’s event marks the 750th anniversary of the construction of the castle, which is the central venue of the iconic medieval fair
Only a few days away, the most anticipated event in Castro Marim is almost here, from this August 21 (Wednesday) to 25 (Sunday). The 25th edition of the Medieval Days Fair will take visitors back in time for five days.
The event will feature encounters with “kings, queens, knights in shining armour, jesters, merchants, monks, nobles, and even magical and demonic creatures roaming the village”, according to the organisers, in a true medieval setting.
There will be 45 arts and crafts demonstrations inside the castle, along with crowd favourites such as the medieval jousting tournaments and the torture instrument exhibition.
Part of Castro Marim’s Medieval Days are its banquets, held in an exclusive area lit by torchlight. These special feasts offer a “menu of the finest period delicacies accompanied by performances from various entertainment groups”. For those wanting an even more unique experience, a royal table can be booked, where 10 guests can be “Kings for a Night” and dine in the style of medieval nobility. Banquet tickets cost €60, and can be purchased here.
Setting itself apart, the event will feature “exclusive performances by 30 national and international entertainment groups”, from street theatre performances and fire breathers to medieval musicians and dancers, jugglers, sword fighters, contortionists and even snake charmers.
The programme also includes a parade on the first and last day of the event, which is described as “one of the best opportunities to absorb this world of imagination and fantasy”. Additionally, this year’s event will include participation from the twin towns of Guérande, France, and Cortegana, Spain, adding to the international aspect.
The event will also offer entertainment options for the little ones, with kid-friendly areas featuring games, workshops, storytellers, carousels and more.
Finally, reenactors from the Real Academia do Terço will recreate the daily life in the 17th-century salt and spice trading caravan at the nearby Fort of São Sebastião, and for the nightly closing show, video mapping technology will be used to display the history of the castle on its walls.
Tickets are available to purchase online and at the site, starting at €8 (adults) and €5 (children aged 6 to 11), as well as five-day pass and banquet tickets, which can be purchased at BOL’s website or through the usual outlets such as Worten, Fnac and El Corte Inglés stores.
